Project Overview

The Scheels Sports Complex in Chandler, Arizona is one of the state’s most prominent retail and entertainment destinations, combining large-scale architecture with complex structural systems. The facility features open-span trusses, clerestory framing, and multi-level circulation paths that demanded precision in both coordination and fabrication.

Structures Online played a key role in detailing the structural steel framework that supports the building’s expansive roof and perimeter systems. Working closely with the fabricator and design team, we provided 3D modelling and detailed connection drawings that ensured field-fit accuracy, strength, and long-term performance.

Scope of Work

Clerestory Truss Assembly
Located at the uppermost section of the structure, the Clerestory Truss Area features diagonal W-beams, HSS beams, angles, and gusset plates. Our detailing scope included defining precise member geometry, welding sequences, and connection detailing to maintain the truss’s stability and alignment across long spans.

Complex HSS Beam-to-Column Connection
HSS beams were connected to W-columns from the web side using end plates, designed to enhance load distribution and weld surface area. This detailing ensured efficient load transfer and minimized fabrication tolerance issues.

Central Connection Junction
At the truss junction, multiple HSS beams converge at a central HSSR pipe that serves as the structural hub. Diagonal braces are bolted to this pipe, requiring detailed alignment and plate configuration for accurate field assembly.

Multiple Staircases
A continuous stair system runs at multiple locations, integrated into the main framing layout. Our team detailed these assemblies with bolted and welded connections to ensure structural integrity and architectural uniformity.
