Project Description
Phoenix Children’s Hospital
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Client:Bell Steel, Inc.
General Contractor: Kitchell Contractors
Project Type: Institutional – Healthcare Facility
Scope:Steel Detailing for Structural Framing, Floor Systems, Bracing, and Support Infrastructure (638 Tons)
Project Overview
Phoenix Children's Hospital is a multi-story healthcare facility designed to support specialized patient care, advanced medical services, and future expansion requirements. The project required precise coordination between structural steel systems and building services to accommodate the complex demands of a modern healthcare environment.
Structures Online (SOL)provided comprehensive steel detailing services for approximately 638 tons of structural steel, delivering detailed 3D models and fabrication-ready drawings. Special attention was given to connection accuracy, floor framing coordination, and integration with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems to ensure efficient fabrication and installation.
Scope of Work
Primary Structural Framework :
The primary framing system consists of a coordinated network of columns, girders, and beams supporting the multi-story hospital structure. Member alignment, elevations, and connection interfaces were carefully detailed to ensure fabrication accuracy and efficient site erection.
Precision Connection and Node Detailing :
Critical beam-to-column and beam-to-beam junctions were developed with detailed bolt layouts, weld specifications, and connection assemblies. Particular attention was given to maintaining structural continuity, minimizing congestion, and ensuring constructability throughout the project.
Secondary Framing and Floor Systems :
A comprehensive secondary framing network was developed to support floor systems while accommodating the extensive MEP requirements typical of healthcare facilities. Members were coordinated to allow efficient installation and future adaptability within clinical spaces.
Bracing and Lateral Stability Systems :
Bracing members were integrated throughout the structural frame to provide lateral stability and overall structural performance. Each component was detailed with accurate member orientation, connection interfaces, and fabrication-ready geometry.
Access and Support Framing :
The project also included detailing for support framing associated with building services and accessibility systems. Miscellaneous steel components, including stair supports and service-path framing, were carefully coordinated to integrate seamlessly with the primary structural system.
Key Deliverables
Detailed 3D structural models for all framing systems
Shop and fabrication drawings for primary and secondary members
Coordinated detailing for MEP integration and support systems
Fabrication-ready connection models supporting efficient erection
Project Outcome
Through precise modeling and coordinated detailing, Structures Online contributed to the successful execution of Phoenix Children's Hospital. The project demonstrates SOL's expertise in healthcare facility steel detailing, complex system coordination, and constructability-driven modeling, delivering a reliable and efficient structural solution aligned with the demands of modern healthcare infrastructure.
