Project Description
Mayo Clinic
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Client: Able Steel
Project Type: Institutional – Healthcare Facility
Scope: Steel Detailing for Structural Connections, Platforms, and Miscellaneous Steel
Project Overview
The Mayo Clinic project involved detailed steel modeling and connection detailing for a healthcare facility requiring precision, coordination, and constructability. The project included a variety of structural and miscellaneous steel components, each demanding careful detailing to ensure seamless integration within the overall structural system.
Structures Online (SOL) provided fabrication-ready models and shop drawings, focusing on complex connection types, splice details, and platform systems. Special attention was given to alignment, fit-up accuracy, and coordination with surrounding structural elements to ensure efficient fabrication and installation.
Scope of Work
Side Plate Beam-to-Column Connections : The project included multiple types of side plate beam-to-column connections, where beams were bolted to columns using side plates and angle connections. Both single-plate and double-plate configurations were detailed and applied at various locations based on structural requirements. Each connection was modeled with precise bolt layouts, plate thicknesses, and alignment to ensure proper load transfer and ease of installation.
HSS-to-HSS Splice Connection : This HSS splice connection required detailed modeling due to the need for cutting and shaping both the HSS members and connection plates. The complexity of the geometry demanded precise coordination of plate fit-up, weld preparation, and alignment to achieve a clean and fabrication-ready splice assembly.
Elevated Landing Platform System : The project included a landing platform above the floor, supported by steel pipe columns. The platform was detailed with accurate support conditions, framing members, and connection interfaces. A curved railing system was integrated into the platform, requiring careful modeling to maintain consistent geometry and smooth transitions along the curved profile.
Moment Splice Connection at Column :A moment splice connection was detailed at the column level to ensure continuity of structural members. The splice incorporated end plates, bolt arrangements, and weld preparations designed to transfer moments effectively while maintaining alignment between column segments.
Key Deliverables
• Detailed 3D models for structural connections and platform systems
• Shop and fabrication drawings for beam-to-column connections and HSS splices
• Coordination of curved railing systems and elevated platforms
• Fabrication-ready detailing ensuring accurate fit-up and efficient installation
Project Outcome
Through precise detailing and coordinated modeling, Structures Online contributed to the successful execution of the Mayo Clinic project. The work highlights SOL’s expertise in complex connection detailing, architectural integration, and healthcare facility coordination, ensuring a structurally sound and constructible solution.
