Project Description
Baltimore Structural
Location: Baltimore, Maryland
Client: Kansas City Structural Steel
Project Type: Commercial – Structural Steel Package
Scope: Steel Detailing for Bracing Systems, Column Base Connections, Stairs, and Congested Structural Zones
Project Overview
The Baltimore Structural Package involved detailed steel modeling and connection detailing for a complex structural system incorporating braced frames, column splices, and multi-level access components. The project required careful coordination within congested framing zones, where multiple structural and circulation elements intersected.
Structures Online (SOL) delivered high-precision steel detailing focused on constructability, fabrication efficiency, and erection clarity. The scope demanded meticulous attention to connection geometry, bolt accessibility, and alignment across vertical and lateral load-resisting systems.
Scope of Work
Bracing and Column Splice Connections
This model includes detailed representation of bracing and splice connections integrated with the main columns. Each connection was developed to ensure accurate bolt alignment, plate positioning, and weld accessibility, supporting efficient fabrication and field installation.
Braced Column Base Connection
A braced column base connection was detailed using gusset plates and base plates anchored to the foundation. Bolt layouts, plate sizing, and weld access were carefully coordinated to satisfy both structural performance and erection requirements at the site interface.
Congested Framing Zone Coordination
The detailing scope included the integration of stair assemblies, floor beams, and bracing systems within a highly congested structural zone. Each element was modeled with precision to maintain required clearances for stair movement, handrails, and intersecting bracing members.
Multi-Flight Staircase System
A multi-flight staircase system was fully modeled to ensure alignment across successive floors, maintaining uniform riser heights and tread spacing throughout the vertical stack. Connection detailing between stringers, landing beams, and handrails was coordinated to achieve structural continuity and visual consistency.
Key Deliverables
Detailed 3D models for bracing systems, column bases, and stair assemblies.
Shop and fabrication drawings with coordinated bolt patterns, weld details, and plate geometries.
Connection detailing optimized for fabrication access and erection efficiency.
Erection-ready assemblies addressing congested structural conditions.
Project Outcome
Through precise modeling and coordinated detailing, Structures Online contributed to the successful delivery of the Baltimore Structural Package, ensuring that complex connections and multi-level access systems were executed with accuracy and efficiency. The project highlights SOL’s expertise in managing connection-intensive steel packages, congested framing environments, and high-precision stair detailing.
