Project Description

Arizona Humane Society – Phoenix, Arizona

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Client: Able Steel Fabricators Inc.
Project Type: Institutional – Veterinary Healthcare Facility
Scope: Steel Detailing for Structural Framing, Floor Systems, Access Infrastructure, and Connection Assemblies (415 Tons)

Project Overview

The Arizona Humane Society project involved comprehensive steel detailing for a state-of-the-art veterinary healthcare facility designed to support advanced animal care, medical services, and daily operations. The project required precise coordination of structural framing, floor systems, access components, and connection assemblies to ensure constructability, fabrication efficiency, and long-term structural performance.

Structures Online (SOL) provided steel detailing services for approximately 415 tons of structural steel, delivering fully coordinated 3D models and fabrication-ready drawings. The project demanded close coordination between primary and secondary framing systems, mezzanine levels, and access infrastructure to support efficient fabrication and seamless field installation.

Scope of Work

Primary Structural Framework :

The primary structural system consists of columns, girders, and beams forming the main framework of the facility. Member alignment, elevations, and connection interfaces were carefully coordinated to ensure structural integrity, fabrication accuracy, and efficient erection.

Floor Framing and Mezzanine Systems :

The project included extensive floor framing and mezzanine structures designed to maximize functional space throughout the facility. Secondary framing members and composite floor systems were modeled with precise geometry to ensure accurate fabrication and seamless installation.

Staircase, Access, and Support Structures :

Multiple stair systems, access platforms, and supporting steel components were detailed to provide safe circulation between levels. These elements were fully integrated with the primary structural frame while meeting project-specific accessibility and constructability requirements.

Connection Detailing for Fabrication :

Primary and secondary framing connections—including bolted and welded assemblies, end plates, and support interfaces—were fully detailed to minimize fabrication conflicts and support efficient field installation while maintaining structural continuity.

Advanced 3D Modeling and BIM Coordination :

A fully coordinated Tekla Structures model was developed to improve visualization, facilitate interdisciplinary coordination, and reduce field modifications. The BIM model supported seamless collaboration between the detailing, fabrication, and construction teams throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Deliverables

  • Detailed 3D structural modelsfor all framing systems

  • Shop and fabrication drawings for primary and secondary steel members

  • Coordinated detailing for floor systems, mezzanines, and access infrastructure

  • Fabrication-ready models supporting efficient erection and installation

Project Outcome

Through precise modeling and coordinated detailing, Structures Online contributed to the successful execution of the Arizona Humane Society project. The project demonstrates SOL's expertise in institutional healthcare facilities, complex structural coordination, and constructability-driven steel detailing, delivering a reliable and fabrication-ready structural solution.
